I love learning about things. If I had the money I would be up perpetual student but instead I have to be a student of life and learn all the kind of little things that no one really cares about. In fact some of my favorite podcasts are what you missed in history class and how stuff works for the talk about things like how touchscreens work or about the princess that thought she was made of glass was going to break... things like that.
And that all platitude about you learn something new every day is totally true. Here are three things I learned just last week:
One. The horsehair worm is parasite found in house crickets. It gets inside of the cricket eating dead things and then develops inside. The cricket is a land animal the horsehair worm water in it. So when the worm is ready to be released it actually takes over the mind of the cricket forcing it to take a suicide jump into a body of water where the cricket drowns and the worm emerges. Interesting no?
Two. The movie meet me in St. Louis with Judy Garland is one of my favorite classics. The song have yourself a Merry Christmas is iconic. Obviously a classic for the holidays. But did you know that it was written specifically for Judy Garland in the movie meet me in St. Louis which is not a Christmas movie. Also the version we know today was not the original song. The song was written with more depressing lyrics which Judy Garland requested to be more uplifting. The writer apparently refused and for six weeks the song was not the sun because she refused to do it finally he was convinced it would be coming it if she sent it and he wrote it therefore we now have the song have yourself a Merry Christmas.
Three. Did you know that women used to not be allowed to run in the Boston Marathon? Until one brave woman, which always seems to be the case, when ahead and ran it anyway even with the race organizers trying to physically remove her.
